What Is the CIA?
The CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) is the only globally recognized certification in the field of internal auditing, issued by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) — the leading international body for internal audit standards, certification, and education with over 245,000 members worldwide.
A CIA-certified professional has demonstrated advanced knowledge of internal audit processes, risk management, governance frameworks, fraud detection, and business controls. CIAs are trusted to examine and enhance the operational and financial integrity of organizations across every sector.
Why Earn Your CIA?
The CIA credential is uniquely powerful because of its global exclusivity and the critical nature of the role. Here's what sets it apart:
Exclusive credential: It's the only globally recognized certification dedicated specifically to internal auditing — no other designation compares.
Premium earning power: CIAs earn up to 51% more than non-certified internal auditors performing the same role.
High demand: 94% of audit leaders say the CIA designation adds value to internal audit work, and 70% of Chief Audit Executives prefer to hire certified professionals.
Career mobility: CIAs are valued in corporations, governments, financial institutions, NGOs, and consulting firms across the globe.
Trusted status: The CIA signals the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and competency in the internal audit space.
Who Should Pursue the CIA?
The CIA is the natural path for professionals who work in or aspire to work in internal auditing, risk management, and governance. It is particularly suited for:
CIA Exam Structure
The CIA exam consists of three parts, each testing a distinct set of competencies. Candidates can take the parts in any order and have three years to complete all three.

| Part 2: Practice of Internal Auditing | Managing the internal audit activity, planning and performing engagements, communicating results, monitoring outcomes | 100 MCQs | 2 Hours |
| Part 3: Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing | Business acumen, information security, information technology, financial management | 100 MCQs | 2 Hours |
A passing scaled score of 600 out of 750 is required on each part. The exam is administered at Pearson VUE test centres in 14 languages worldwide.
Eligibility Requirements
The IIA offers multiple pathways to enter the CIA program, with requirements tailored to your level of education and experience:
Education | A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution. Candidates in their final year of a bachelor's program may also apply. The IIA also accepts certain professional certifications (e.g., CPA, ACCA) in lieu of educational requirements. |
Work Experience | Varies by education: Master's degree holders need 1 year; Bachelor's degree holders need 2 years; Those without a degree need 5 years. Experience can be in internal audit, risk management, compliance, quality assurance, external audit, or internal control. |
Character Reference | One professional reference required, attesting to the candidate's moral and professional character. |
Ethics | Agreement to abide by the IIA's Code of Ethics and professional standards. |
